I have started to work at a cram school since this March. People often ask about what is the difference between schools and cram schools at the job training and a company information session.
One day, my boss answered this question. The answer was really interesting. It was “There is the energy to make good things or not.” I didn’t understand the meaning well, but when I asked the reason, I was convinced that I could relate not only to cram schools but also to real life, so today I would like to write about a story about making something good with competitive energy.
Before I write about this topic, I want to say I don’ t think school is bad and cram school is better than school. I think that there are advantages in schools that are not available at cram schools, and there are advantages in cram schools that are not available at schools. What I am going to from now on is just a difference from one point of view between the two, so I hope you feel that way.
At first, I think the two have something in common: ” Give children a wide range of knowledge and expand their potential.” Then, let’s talk about the difference between school education and cram school education.
About schools, as long as you don’t go to a private school, you go to a school in a designated area where you get order. The teaching materials, teachers, class contents, and number of classes are all designated in advance, so you don’ t have to choose by yourself. In this way, school education is determined by the government and the city from the beginning. As we proceed according to the curriculum, we don’t have to compete with other schools, and unless the government executed a big project, the content of education will not evolve.
On the other hand, cram schools are not determined by the government or the city for private education, but since there are private companies, they have to make “profits” to pay their employees. Therefore, in order to make more profit, it will differentiate itself from other cram schools. Like this, cram schools are business. So, unlike schools, it is very particular about the choice of textbook, class organizations, and quality of teachers. That’s why cram schools have the energy to compete with other cram schools and try to create better ones. I was thought that this energy leads to the evolution of education.
It is true that the cram school I went to before has been really changed for only few years. AI systems has been introduced that allows AI to judge students’ weakness points and analyze them from the past. Also, the cram school have started online classes. On then other hand, I guess schools have not changed except iPad has been distributed because of the corona virus ,but students still cannot use iPad in my city.
Of course, school is not all about being able to study, and there are experiences that you can never get at cram schools. However, like this, “If competitive energy can make something good, I thought it would be better to incorporate competitiveness into school education.
By the way, I take TOIEC once a year. I took TOEIC test again recently, but I was shocked that my score didn’t go up at all compared to before I studied abroad last year.However, after listening to this story I immediately understood the reason.
Recently, I’ve been taking slow English lessons, and I thought my English ability was improving because I was exposed to English every day, but I didn’t have a clear goal or competitive mind about how I wanted to be compared to my past self, so I felt that I didn’t improve.

But when I looked back on my days as an examinee, I remembered that I was always competitive about my past self and that my grades went up. Every day, I thought , ” I want to be like myself compared to yesterday” and ” I get a better score than I did last exam.” I think that the competition can create energy and allow me to grow.
Today, I wrote about education and study with the theme of “making something good with competitive energy” and I think this is connected to everything that tries to create something good.
