I wrote about CES2021 and focused on Japanese companies before. I felt that there are some differences between Japanese company’s trend and foreign’s ones. So, today I would like to focus on foreign country’s companies and wrote about my opinions.
Before writing this topic, I would like to write about how corona has changed from the previous CES before. Before 2020, I think it was basic to display “new products”. However, this year, I felt that there were many exhibitions focusing on “storytelling” to convey the company, such as “why are we making this products” and “why our company should make this product.”
I think that’s because it’s the year when “human rights, discrimination, environment” and other things became problems beside corona. I think that’s why many companies are facing these social problems and talking about what the company should be like.
Based on current society situation and trends in the world, the company I focused on was General Motors, which stands for GM, and American automobile company. It has the largest market share in the United States from 1930 to World War Ⅱ. The reason why I chose GM is because I got the impression that the automobile industry, which I felt was side by side, had a new wind.
The overall CES automobile industry has seen an increase in the number of exhibitions over the past 3 or 4 years, but the tone of “self-driving” has declined. Is “automatic driving” a dream or reality? I think a lot of people thought it would be a difficult situation to achieve. GM was also in the same situation as other companies in terms of the practically of self-driving.
However, this year, they focused on “EV cars” and tried to change the direction. They have declared that all automobiles will be electrified by 2035, and all products and operations will be de-carbonized by 2040. We can see that the company’s logo has been changed to a design reminiscent of an “outlet” and that they are trying to focus on EV cars. I felt that the company had once failed, so it was determined to take this opportunity to be reborn.
Among them, the most interesting announcement was to make a big car called Hammer capable of driving 100 miles on a 10-minute charge. If the development is progressing that much, I felt the effectiveness of the plan for 2035.
There is another interesting company. That’s “Wallmart”. The headquarter is in the US and it is the world’s largest supermarket chain with the largest sales in the world. However, it didn’t participate in CES until last year. But, I think the reason why it participated this year is because it focused on “digitalization”.
Wallmart has responded to the surge in EC demand in the pandemic and expanded its contactless service such as “carp-side pick up”, which receives products ordered online in the parking lot of the store. In September 2020, they introduced a paid membership program that allows unlimited use of online supermarket same-day delivery services.
Certainly, I have the impression that “digitalization” of the retail industry has been focused on before corona. When I conducted as a inspection survey of supermarkets in the US, I was surprised to find that the number of employees in the vast store was few, and they were not seen moving around in the display or cash register. Nevertheless, a large number of products were arranged neatly on every shelf.
When I looked into what operation systems made this possible, I found out that AI, big data, and robotics technologies were actively incorporated into the management business. In the night, robotics in the store can display and manage products and handle a large amount of them accurately. I think this technology has brought Wallmart to the forefront with CES 2021.
I’m a little off topic, but these are the world’s trends that I’ve researched about CES2021. I think you can see the world’s demand just by searching CES. I would like to keep eye on world trends and be able to predict in the future even a little.
